Concert to cap Eagle Mountain party
The city's annual celebration is dedicated to the city's late event coordinator, Lynn Story, who died in her sleep May 4.
"She was already working on (the celebration)," said city publicist Linda Peterson.
The quartet of Duane Propes, Porter Howell, Del Gray and Dwayne O'Brien comprise Little Texas. Originally a band of six in the early 1990s, then five, four of them reunited four years ago after a four-year hiatus, said Propes.
Howell became the new lead singer at the first comeback show in Illinois.
"He blew the doors off" that concert, Propes said.
The band this time around is leaner and ready to give the Eagle Mountain crowd a good time, he said.
"Our concerts are 40 percent us and 60 percent the crowd," he said.
Most of their tunes are their own, with Howell writing many of them. Propes and Howell have been playing together since their high school days in Longview, Texas.
The group's hits include "Party Life," "Gotta Get Me Down Home," "You Ain't Seen Me Lately" and "So Long."
The name Little Texas comes from a town by that name outside of Nashville and the fact that their first rehearsals were in a hall on Little Texas Lane, Probes said.
The Triple Threat Tour this year is going to just half a dozen venues, Eagle Mountain being one of them.
"We like Utah," Propes said. "(Our concerts there) are always crowded. For whatever reason we've been accepted there as one of the hometown bands."
Top on the list of Pony Express Days events is a Home for a Hero key ceremony and open house on May 30. A new home in Eagle Mountain will be given to Sgt. 1st Class Gordon Ewell and his family in honor of his military service. Alta Vista Homes built the single-story house near Unity Pass with a national nonprofit organization, Homes for Our Troops, and Mike's Guardian Eagle Foundation. The home is adapted to accommodate Ewell's walking disabilities from his service in Iraq.
Pony Express Days activities include such new events as geocaching, a children's scavenger hunt and basketball and softball tournaments. Once again adventure-seekers may participate in all-terrain buggy tours and helicopter rides. Other events include an outdoor movie, local talent showcase and a traditional carnival.
SilverLake Amphitheater is at 7920 N. SilverLake Parkway east of the Ranches area. No coolers, chairs or umbrellas are allowed.
The Pony Express Days celebration commemorates the pony express mail service, which ran from St. Joseph, Mo., to Sacramento, Calif., from 1860-61. The original pony express trail runs through Eagle Mountain. Part of it is now known as Pony Express Parkway.
