Teen killed in West Valley auto-ped accident
About 3 p.m., Sergio Godoy was crossing near 3450 South. He was not in a crosswalk, said West Valley Police Capt. Tom McLachlan.
Godoy, from Wendover, Utah, was in West Valley City visiting his mother who was in the hospital. He was walking across the road with a friend when he was struck by a SUV, McLachlan said.
All other traffic had stopped for the boys, but the driver of the SUV tried to get around the vehicle by driving on the right shoulder, he said. Godoy was struck in the shoulder of the road.
"The driver did not see the 14-year-old," McLachlan said.
Godoy was taken to Intermountain Medical Center but died before he could be transported again to Primary Children's Medical Center.
An investigation was under way Wednesday to determine if the 18-year-old driver who hit the teen should be charged.
After the accident, Godoy's friend fled the scene. Detectives later located the boy, a student at Wendover High School, back at his home. McLachlan did not know Wednesday why the boy ran off after the accident.
