Union High School announced on Thursday that it has hired Sam Elliott to be its new football coach.

The Cougars are coming off a season in which they qualified for the state semifinals. It was their best season since 1993, the last time they won a state title.

Elliott replaces Doug Bills, who recently returned to Springville High to teach and coach. Elliott coached at Tooele for three years and played at Cedar High and Southern Utah University.

"We are thrilled to be able to come out to a community that has demonstrated so much enthusiasm towards football," said Elliott. "Football has been a great part of my life and I look forward to getting to work and being a Cougar."
