Baptism for dead an honor

I cannot understand why anyone would be offended by the LDS practice of baptism for the dead. My father, a CPA, had a very rich client. When my father died, he came to my father's viewing. He said he hoped he had not offended me or my mother, but he had purchased a membership in the Purgatorian Society for my dad. He said 11 high Masses would be conducted every day for my father in perpetuity. I told him we were not offended but were honored he cared enough about my father to do that. This man, a Catholic, did what he felt was the most important thing he could do for my dad. How could I possibly be offended by what he did out of love and respect for my father?
