High school track: Track athletes tune up for state at region meets
Region 1 sported a familiar team in the driver's seat. Davis swept both the boys and girls team titles at Syracuse High.
Ryan Avery was a standout individual performer for the Darts. Avery finished in 10.94 seconds to claim the 100 meters title and jumped 22 feet and 6 1/2 inches to win the long jump.
He also helped the 400 meter relay team win in 42.37 seconds to set a new region record.
For Avery, his most unexpected win was in the long jump. He had only competed in the event once this season, because of back problems, and did not expect to do much.
"I just kind of came of nowhere," Avery said. "I didn't have my steps or anything. Then I just came out and flew."
Bailee Whitworth and Stephanie Muelleck both claimed a pair of individual region titles for Viewmont. Muelleck swept the 100 and 300 hurdles, while Whitworth won the 100 and 200 meters.
Region 2 produced an unexpected winner, with host Alta claiming the girls championship. Soccer star Kealia Ohai led the way for the Hawks, winning the long jump with a leap of 16 feet and 9 inches.
Brady Johnson and Justin Judd dominated the hurdles to lead the Huskies. Judd won the 300 hurdles with a time of 40.29 seconds, while Johnson prevailed in the 110 with a time of 15.09.
Morgan and Ogden split team titles in Region 11. The Trojans claimed the boys title behind a strong performance from Mike Hardy, who won both the 1,600 and 3,200. The Tigers were the top girls team at Ogden High, thanks to the continued domination of distance runner Sarah Callister and Chloe Calton.
Callister and Calton placed either first or second in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters. Callister was the winner in the 3200, while Calton prevailed in the 800 and 1,600.
Franco Montes stood out for Ogden as well, sweeping four events. Montes posted a 22.59 in the 200, the event he has targeted to set his next state record.
Judge Memorial dominated the Region 10 meet at Unitah as expected. The Bulldogs swept both team titles even as they rested senior stars like Luke Puskedra and Hailey Knettles in order to allow some younger kids to qualify for state.
"It was an all-around meet for us," Judge coach Dan Quinn said. "We scored across the board.
In Region 9, Cedar swept both 3A team titles while Pine View and Snow Canyon split the 4A titles - with the Panthers claiming the boys crown and the Warriors topping the girls teams.
Region 3 staged preliminaries in most events because Wednesday's rainy weather delayed the start of the meet until Thursday. Several event finals will be held this afternoon at Riverton High.
All field events were completed however. Riverton's Brianne Campbell won both the high jump and long jump while Silverwolves thrower Candus Aiello claimed first in the shot (41-00) and discus (118-09). On the boys side, Bingham's Keith Sasine earned victories in the long jump (21-05) and pole vault (13-06).
Final results from other regions were not available at Deseret News press time.
