'Hundreds of billions' unlikely

Excuse me? Does J. Brent Adair (Readers' Forum, May 7) have any idea how much a billion really is? He claims it would cost "hundreds of billions a month" to pay for the needs Don Gale mentioned in his column of May 3 — needs that are going begging because of our failed military adventure in Iraq. Maybe $144 billion a year wouldn't pay all the bills for all time, but more could be done. For example, one day's cash outlay for military operations in Iraq could pay for thousands to have a four-year college education.

Let's not let "millions" and "billions" and "trillions" become words we throw around to make political points.
