One of the goals this year is to plant 410,000 of the larger rainbow in the reservoir. But along with a shortage of fish, there is also a shortage of money.

In response, Utah sportsmen have come forward to help.

John and Paul Phillips of the Strawberry Bay Lodge and Don and John Mecham of Trail of the Sportsman are leading the group. Joining the effort is the Salt Lake County Fish and Game Association, Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife, Trailtv.com, the Strawberry Anglers Association, the Strawberry Bay Marina, Cabela's and Sportsman's Warehouse.

The group is working to raise the additional funds needed to raise the larger rainbow.

Raising the extra money will allow the DWR to reach its goal of putting 410,000 8-inch rainbow trout into Strawberry.

About 40,000 of the 410,000 rainbows scheduled for stocking into Strawberry will be raised at the Logan hatchery.

Last week the group presented the DWR with a check for $14,000 to go toward planting the fish.

Under the current hatchery system, the DWR plans to plant 175,000 pounds of fish in Strawberry. The fish will be a mix of 8-inch sterile rainbow trout, Bear Lake cutthroat trout and kokanee salmon.
