Park City shuts out Juan Diego

PARK CITY— Park City soccer coach Caro Caro expects a lot from his team, perfection in fact.

That attitude helps explain why he wasn't buzzing with excitement following his team's 2-0 win over Juan Diego Saturday afternoon in the 3A quarterfinals.

"I'm not happy, actually," said Caro. "When we play teams that aren't as dangerous or as strong, they tend to relax too much and just think we are going to win. I need to prepare for the next round, it's not going to be as easy as this one."

He would've liked to see better finishing, crisper passing and better decision-making in Saturday's win. In reality, though, except on the scoreboard, it's hard to imagine Park City dominating any more than it already did.

With Juan Diego committing so few players to the attack and losing possession far too easily in the midfield, the Soaring Eagle never really threatened to score.

In fact, its best scoring opportunity came on a long-range shot just before halftime, an opportunity goalkeeper Jacob Sirianni easily corralled near the post. Juan Diego didn't have a single shot from within the penalty area.

"Without being rude, I don't believe they were a strong team today. I don't think they presented themselves as any threat for us," said Caro.

That was a problem after falling behind so quickly. Just six minutes into the match, Tucker Sheppard uncorked a 30-yard bomb to put the Miners in front 1-0 — a shot eerily similar to the one Paul Scholes put in for Manchester United in the Champions League earlier this week.

"The plan was to be aggressive from the get-go, for my offense to pressure their defense, to control the game on their side, and we did that," said Caro.

Park City had several opportunities to double the lead during the remainder of the first half, including Tommy Martin's free kick off the crossbar in the 26th minute.

Even though Juan Diego never really threatened to score, Park City wasn't able to truly breathe easy until Brian Johnson's 48th-minute volley past Juan Diego's charging keeper put his team ahead 2-0.

With the victory, Park City advances to the 3A semifinals, where it will face face Region 10 foe Uintah, which pulled off another upset on Saturday. The teams split the high-scoring season series, with Uintah winning 5-3 and Park City returning the favor with a 4-3 win.

Their semifinal showdown is set for next Friday at Timpview High School at 5 p.m.
