Challengers traditionally have a tough time raising money from PACs, which tend to give to people who have influence in Congress now. So much of their money in Utah races this year is coming from candidates' own pockets.

Republican homebuilder Bill Dew, who is challenging Matheson, loaned his campaign $250,000 — all that he raised. Former Republican congressman Merrill Cook, who is also challenging Matheson, provided $5,000 to his campaign, or 28 percent of what he raised.

In the race against Cannon, Republican challenger David O. Leavitt provided $142,000 out of his own pocket to his campaign — 59 percent of his total.

Republican Jason Chaffetz, who is also challenging Cannon, provided $3,140 out of his own pocket — but that was only 4.5 percent of what he raised. He was the only candidate among those who had filed disclosure forms who had raised more than 90 percent of his money from individuals.
