• If you see a baby bird on the ground this spring, don't pick it up. Its parents will keep feeding it and it can still learn to fly.

• When you build a birdhouse, don't put a little peg underneath the front door. The nesting birds don't need it when they enter. And a peg invites intruder birds to sit at the door and bedevil the babies inside.

• When nesting season approaches, you might want to stand under a tree to clean out your hairbrushes and pet combs. Birds will incorporate the hair into the nests they are building.

• Wondering how high to hang your birdhouse? Bill Fenimore recommends grandpa hoisting height, i.e., not so high off the ground that an adult can't lift a child to peep inside. Come fall, you'll need easy access to the birdhouse so that you can clean it out.
