PROVO — The Mountain Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering a comprehensive course required for those attending the Philmont High Adventure camp this summer. The camp is a Scout camp.

It can take several hours for a member of the Philmont camp staff to reach those in the backcountry. For that reason, the camp is requiring that at least one person, preferably two, either an adviser or a youth participant in each crew, be certified in American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid and CPR from the American Red Cross.

The American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid is a 16-hour course designed to help in situations when help is not readily available. First Aid and CPR training will result in proper and prompt attention being given to injuries and/or illnesses. Participants must present current certification cards upon check-in to verify that they meet this requirement.

The Wilderness First Aid three-day class will be 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. May 1-3 at the Mountain Valley Chapter office, 865 N. Freedom Blvd. The May 3 session will be held from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at a remote location. The minimum age requirement for participants is 15 years.
