OREM — In a game that the Iowa Energy led by double digits most of the way, the Energy held off a late run from the Utah Flash to take a 110-98 victory Friday night.

After Utah coach Brad Jones picked up a technical foul, the Flash went on a 23-12 run to cut Iowa's lead to 97-93 with 2:38 left, but the Energy recovered to score 13 of the last 18 points to pull away.

"Iowa had the energy from the get-go," Jones said. "This is a long game, and if you have to play from behind the whole time, it's even longer."

The Flash (23-26) fell behind almost immediately. After taking their only lead at 4-2, Iowa (22-27) went on a 12-2 run to take control. Iowa guard Jeff Horner hit back-to-back 3-pointers from the same spot at the right wing to ignite the run.

The Energy were able to extend their lead to 13 points at the end of the first quarter when forward Fabricio Vay found himself wide open at the left wing and drained a 3-pointer to beat the buzzer and give Iowa a 34-21 lead.

The Energy were never threatened in the second quarter. Utah could get no closer than nine points as Iowa took a 52-41 lead into halftime.

The third quarter went much the same way, with the Flash unable to get closer than nine.

Utah's highlight during the quarter happened with a couple minutes into the period, when guard Kevin Kruger threw up a wild layup attempt, and guard Andre Ingramflew in to dunk home the miss.

Iowa held a 78-64 heading into the fourth quarter and led 85-70 after Jones' technical foul.

At that point, the Flash finally made a run, scoring nine straight to cut the Energy's lead to 87-81. After Horner hit a 3-pointer to cap a 5-0 Iowa spurt, Utah scored 10 of the next 12 points to close to within four.

The run was highlighted by a crazy play that saw the Energy try to save the ball from going out of bounds and it bouncing off a referee to Ingram, who drained a 3-pointer from the left wing.

But the Flash couldn't get any closer, as Iowa forward Adam Haluska hit a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired, and that proved to be the dagger.

Horner led Iowa with 21 points, nine assists, five steals and four rebounds. Guard Curtis Stinson, who had been waived by the Flash on March 4, had 17 points in his return to Utah.

Utah guard Lamar Rice had 21 points and seven rebounds, while guard Morris Almond added 20 points.
