Draper and Holladay have joined a spate of other municipalities in outlawing outdoor smoking in parks and other public places.

Holladay has also outlawed alcohol in public places; the city had been one of few cities to allow public drinking.

The punishment for those caught smoking in both cities is a fine of up to $25. The ordinances will be enforced by local law enforcement.

The Holladay ordinance passed unanimously March 27 after months of study by the council and city staff. The city wanted to ensure its ordinances were compatible, said Holladay manger Randy Fitts.

The Draper resolution passed 4-1 on April 2, with Alan Summerhays voting in opposition. Summerhays, one of Draper's newest council members, did not explain his vote.

The two cities join Tooele, Salt Lake City, Murray, Sandy, Logan, Herriman, Midvale, West Valley City and South Jordan in outlawing outdoor smoking as well as Davis, Salt Lake and Weber counties.
