Jordan Board of Education incumbents won't get an extremely extended term without a vote of the people, according to a new plan approved by the Salt Lake County Council on Tuesday.

Now they'll just get two extra years, instead of the extra eight years one board member would have enjoyed under the "unintended consequences" of a bill passed by the Legislature this year.

Earlier this month, House Speaker Greg Curtis and Senate President John Valentine asked the council to fix the problem, and the council quickly followed suit.

Now instead of staggering all the school board races in the current Jordan District and the new east-side district, all incumbents will get an additional two-year term. Legislative leaders want to preserve "institutional knowledge" on the old and new school boards.

The other seats, filled by newcomers, will be staggered with either two or four-year terms.
