PLAYER ON THE RISE: Freshman tight end Kaneakua Friel has made big catches in limited action with the second-team offense, catching passes from Brenden Gaskins and Kurt McEuen. At 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds, out of Honolulu's Kamehameha High, it appears Friel has all the tools to follow in the footsteps of Andrew George and Dennis Pitta after redshirting last season.

INJURY REPORT: It was just what Bronco Mendenhall has tried to avoid all spring — a serious injury. Linebacker Terrance Hooks suffered what appeared to be a serious left knee injury in the final series of plays at the end of Thursday's practice. Hooks had just tipped a Brenden Gaskins pass up in the air and made a move to get underneath it, succeeding, when he crashed to the turf in pain. Right now it appears to be serious, possibly a patella tendon injury, but we'll know more after an examination in the hospital, said Mendenhall.

NOTES: Max Hall completed 10-of-10 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown pass to Austin Collie during a brief 11-on-11 non-contact session on Thursday. Mendenhall will host more than 800 former players and their families today with tours, meetings and a scrimmage before finishing the day with a barbecue.
