Hurricane officer arrested
Nathan Amosa, 24, was booked into the Washington County Jail for investigation of forcible sodomy, a first-degree felony, and two counts of forcible sex abuse, both second-degree felonies.
A press release by the Hurricane Police Department Saturday only said that Amosa had been placed on administrative leave following a complaint of "misconduct" filed against him Friday.
"The Washington County Sheriff's Office was contacted late Friday evening. We were given information about a possible sexual assault. Detectives took up the investigation, conducted interviews, and it continued (Saturday)," said Washington County Sheriff's Lt. Jake Adams.
At the conclusion of the interviews, which included Amosa, he was arrested and booked into jail.
Adams declined to release many details of the assault Saturday evening, saying the Washington County Attorney's Office would release more information later. He confirmed the alleged assault happened while Amosa was on duty but declined to give the location of the offense or say whether it involved a prisoner or someone involved with police action.
Adams said investigators believe there was one victim.
The Hurricane police department said Saturday it could not comment beyond what was on its press release. The department has about 20 officers.
Last week, the Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training Council dealt with a record 35 cases of officer misconduct at its meeting in St. George. The majority of those cases dealt with sexual misconduct.
