High school basketball: 5A girls sparkle against 4A
But unlike most games during the season, this one was all about fun and playing against some tough competition. Winning was secondary.
"It's just fun, just like a big pickup game, going out there and having fun with a bunch of your friends," said Timpview's Alexis Kaufusi, who outscored everyone on both sides of the court with 22 points. "I almost think I play better in this atmosphere. There's no pressure, no right or wrong in an All-Star game."
Though she dominated inside, getting putback after putback and almost scoring at will, it was the 5A team that led from start to finish.
"This was a great team," said 5A and Skyline coach Deb Bennett. "Almost all of them can play almost every position. This is one of the better All-Star games that I've seen. They were great to coach."
Bennett added that she liked how the versatile squad took charge both inside and out.
The 5A All-Stars added seven 3-point shots to their tough inside game, and they knocked down 19-of-32 from the stripe. Of course, in the All-Star game, nobody fouls out.
Fremont's Mechel Hunt finished off the double-digit scoring for the 5A team with 10 points, but there was plenty of balance to their attack as all 10 players finished with three points or more.
The 5A team jumped out to the early lead, ending the first quarter with the 21-14 advantage and extending it slightly to 42-30 at the half.
They came out strong again in the third period, taking a 57-39 lead as only Kaufusi (eight points) and Box Elder's Mandy Munns (one) scored in the period for 4A.
Then it was lights-out scoring for both teams in the fourth quarter as the 5A girls added 23 points to their total, and the 4A girls added 21.
Sky View's Lindee McKinley added eight points for 4A, while West's Fusi Lutui had seven, and Snow Canyon's Angela Walter had six. Mountain Crest's Amanda Jensen and Box Elder's Tiffany Wilde each added five.
The 2A and 3A girls went at it earlier in the afternoon, with the 3A team taking the game 75-69. The 3A girls were led in scoring by Wasatch's Tara Gehring (19 points) and Park City's Lauren Deane (18).
The 1A South All-Stars defeated the 1A North All-Stars 58-49. Bryce Valley's Karrisa Shakespear led with 15 and Monticello's Ashley Dowell had 13. Tabiona's Savanah Gines led the South with 17 points and three treys.
