30-foot fall in Provo park injures climber
The man and a friend were climbing near the popular Red Slab area of the park when he lost his footing and fell onto the uneven terrain below.
"After a fall from 30 feet onto the hard ground, he has multiple abrasions and possibly a fractured arm," said Provo Fire Battalion Chief Gary Jolley. "I don't think he has a head injury, just mainly injuries due to the fall and the terrain being pretty uneven."
The man was conscious and breathing as crews brought him down the trail and transported him to the hospital.
"It took the medics just less then 10 minutes to actually get up to him once they got the initial call," said Jolley. "There were also some people who were climbing with him that assisted him after he fell."
The man's friend received some burns from the rope he held while spotting, so he was also transported to the hospital.
This was the second fall in Utah County in the past week; the first was a hiker that fell on the outskirts of Springville last week.
"We do have a few falls here every spring and summer, but this is the first one here at Rock Canyon so far this year," Jolley said.
