Sommerkorn said the .25-cent tax increase, which requires that 25 percent of tax revenue be dedicated to corridor preservation, isn't the only option county officials are studying.

SB245, sponsored by Sen. Curt Bramble, R-Provo, passed the Legislature with little opposition this year and provides two other options for second-class counties to impose a sales-tax increase for transportation projects.

The bill, which was signed into law Monday, allows those counties to choose a .1-cent increase or a .25-cent increase.

Revenue from the .1-cent increase would be deposited into an interest-earning highway projects fund to be used in the county for right-of-way acquisition, new construction, major renovations and improvements to state highways within the county.

If Davis County were to implement the .25-cent option, .1 cent of that revenue would go into the highway projects fund for the aforementioned reasons, .1-cent would go into the highway projects fund for construction of a regional highway and .05-cent would go into a transportation corridor preservation fund.

The new law doesn't require a vote prior to the tax's implementation.

Sommerkorn said it's going to take some time to decide which of the three options would be best for the county and expects to have a recommendation to the COG by its April meeting.
