ST. GEORGE — Police have arrested two people accused of trying to pass a counterfeit $100 bill at a convenience store.

Officers were called to a Maverik store Sunday afternoon on some fake money being passed. Police said they found a $100 bill that had been printed over a heavily-washed $5 bill. The watermark of Lincoln was still visible, officers said.

After searching the couple's car, police found a printer/scanner, another $5 bill in the process of being washed, and checks taken from a burglary in Cedar City.

"Also in the vehicle were numerous items believed to be the proceeds from business burglaries including cameras, iPods, cell phones and over 25 cell phone chargers," St. George Police Sgt. Craig Harding said Wednesday. "There were also lists of names along with Social Security numbers from a local business."

The 27-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman were booked into the Purgatory Jail on investigation of theft, counterfeiting and possession of drugs.
