CLINTON — Parkside Elementary received a new computer for its library Tuesday, thanks to the Clinton Youth City Council, which won the computer in a do-a-good-deed contest, making it one of the few cases where no one will cry foul at regifting.

Layton dentist Terry Preece presented the computer to Tyler Nelson, a member of the Youth City Council, which in October 2007 completed a service project called "Project Carebear."

The project consisted of compiling about 200 care packages police officers can use to console children involved in crashes or disasters or who are victims of abuse.

Each package contains a teddy bear, granola bar, toothpaste and a toothbrush. The packages were funded by a donation from America First Credit Union.

Nelson submitted an essay to Preece's office, which runs the do-a-good-deed contest twice each year, and the Youth Council's project was selected as the winner of a new desktop computer.

During Tuesday's City Council meeting, Nelson received the computer and turned it over to Tawna Nielson, assistant principal at Parkside Elementary

Nielson said her school's library still has a small collection of books, so computers at the school have been sent to classrooms to create "mini-libraries" students can use to get information.

This computer from the youth council "came out of the blue," Nielson said, adding that she's grateful the youth council contributed the new computer to her school.

Councilwoman Anna Stanton said she's also proud of the youth council.

"I just think our community is a better place to have this youth council in our city," she said.

"In our office, we recognize that it's nice to reward the youth for doing good things," Preece said.

Preece's next contest is running now through May 1.

Those interested in entering the contest must first register and then submit an essay of what they did, why they chose to do it and what happened as a result of their actions.
