State says 6 water suppliers are out of compliance
Of the six the Deseret Morning News managed to contact, five agreed that they were not in compliance and another wasn't certain.
The Water Conservation Plan Act requires that water conservancy districts and water retailers with more than 500 drinking water connections must prepare conservation plans and submit them to the division, according to a press release from the Utah Department of Natural Resources. The plans are to be updated and resubmitted every five years.
The act also requires that the public be informed of those who don't comply.
• West Corinne Water Co. "has never submitted a water conservation plan, as required by the WCPA," says the division.
"How do you like them apples?" asked Curtis Marble of West Corinne Water Co. "Well, we actually do have that water conservation plan."
One was done, but it went on the back burner, he said. However, the company will get it to the state, Marble added.
• Brian Head Water Supply has not filed its required five-year update, the division says.
"I am in the process of completing the new one," said Jo-Ann Necochea, public works assistant for Brian Head Water Supply. She said the original plan was finished in 1999.
• Escalante Culinary Water hasn't filed its required update, the division says.
The only entity of the six that the Deseret Morning News was unable to contact for comment was Escalante Culinary Water.
• North Logan Culinary Water System has not filed the update, according to the division.
Terrel Jay Huppi, production manager for North Logan, said, "If we have failed to do it, I'm not aware of it, let's put it that way. I know we've done it before," and the update could be ready to go in.
• South Salt Lake Culinary also is on the state's list of systems that have not filed an update in a timely fashion.
Dennis Pay, director of public works for South Salt Lake City, said, "We have a plan. We just need to update it and get it in, which we are working on."
• St. George City has failed to file its required five-year update, the division adds.
Rene Fleming of St. George City said, "I am working on it, and it should be submitted by the end of the month, but it is late. But we are doing a lot for water conservation."
The director of the Division of Water Resources, Dennis Strong, said water conservation plans are an important part of meeting the goal of reducing water use through the year 2050. "The plans are meeting their intended goals," he added in the release.
West Jordan was praised for a multifaceted plan submitted three years ago. Strong commended the 145 water companies that have complied with the act.
