The night's honorary short person, 4-foot-11 Katie Kivisto, tied a career high of 9.825 to kick off Utah's floor in her only event of the night. Life-size cardboard posters of Kivisto were placed at arena entrances, and anyone shorter than the poster got in free.

The Utes had season-best team scores on every event, and every vaulter had at least a season best except leadoff Daria Bijak, who had 9.85. Baskett scored two 9.925s and a 9.0, Kim had a 9.925 floor to tie her career high and a 9.90 vault. Postell's scores were the 10 on vault, 9.975 floor, 9.925 on bars and 9.90 beam. Beth Rizzo added a career-high 9.90 floor.

After three meets with numerous execution errors, Utah was far cleaner Friday. Since the Utes' practice week was shortened a day because the heat went out in the gym Monday, Marsden said some athletes told him they do better with only two days of practice, but he wasn't buying it. Still, things did clean up in the practices, and they stayed that way in competition.

"This is ideal," Marsden said of where the Utes are one-fourth of the way through the season, "if we can just stay focused and not feel like we've arrived or we've accomplished everything we need to. I couldn't be more pleased, and I imagine they feel pretty good."

Minnesota's happiness at hitting its season high was tempered by fears that Ashley Mutcher may have a pulled — or worse — an Achilles tendon. She pulled up on the start of a tumbling run.
