High school athletes of the week
Lovell poured in 30 points in a dominating 65-48 victory over Tooele. Three nights later Lovell scored 28 points to lead Payson to an impressive 76-71 win over visiting Timpview. The victories improved Payson's league record to 4-2, good enough for a second-place tie with Timpview two games behind Provo.
Lovell is the leading scorer in 4A at 21.6 points per game, which places him fifth in the entire state.
The senior, who lived in Delta until he was 12, also plays football and baseball for Payson High School.
MECHEL HUNT, Fremont, basketball: This senior could have earned back her starting spot when she returned to the Silver Wolves' lineup a few weeks ago.
"We were ready to start her, but she told me that as long as we're doing what we're doing, which meant winning, that we shouldn't change anything," said Fremont basketball coach Larry Hadley. "She has the entire package, but she checks her ego at the door. She is a total team player."
Hunt is so athletic she's played five sports in her three-year career at Fremont soccer, volleyball, track, softball and basketball. With Hunt back in the lineup, the Silver Wolves are unbeaten in region play.
"She is without a doubt our team leader," Hadley said. "She is the most athletic girl I have had the opportunity to coach."
