"I was talking to Murdock and I had a feeling it was going to be a good night and it was," Cummard said. "It came down from Salt Lake, the 3-point juice."
Cummard also did a stellar job defensively, holding the Lobos' leading scorer, J.R. Giddens, to four points and six rebounds. Giddens tied a season-low in scoring on 2-for-8 shooting. He had averaged 17 points and 10.5 rebounds in his previous eight games.
The defensive game plan called for Cummard to force Giddens inside, where center Trent Plaisted was patrolling the paint to give help.
"J.R. is one of the best players in the conference," Cummard said. "It was a tough assignment."
BYU built its lead to 44-24 at intermission but didn't let up.
Cummard drilled three 3-pointers in the first 10 minutes of the second half to extend the Cougars' lead to 72-40. With eight minutes remaining, BYU had a 79-45 lead and only scored four points the rest of the way. During that final stretch, the Lobos showed signs of life by hitting four 3-pointers, but the outcome had long been decided.
The Cougars go back on the road this week with trips to Air Force on Wednesday and Wyoming on Saturday.
