Men's volleyball team still perfect
Last Friday, BYU beat No. 10 Indiana University-Purdue Fort Wayne in four games (30-23, 32-30, 23-30, 30-26) in front of a crowd that BYU head coach Shawn Patchell called "hostile." Ivan Perez led the Cougars with 22 kills.
"It was very hostile, just how we like it," Patchell said. "The fans were on the floor for a lot of the game. Ivan played well and did a nice job. He served well and was lights out with two different setters."
The next night, BYU was stretched to a full five games, but came out victorious, 23-30, 30-18, 26-30, 30-20, 15-13, over Lewis University. Perez had 20 kills.
On Monday, the Cougars won 3-1 (31-33, 33-31, 30-19, 30-24) over No. 14 Loyola-Chicago, as Russell Holmes led the way with 13 kills, six blocks and three service aces.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: The Cougars (8-7) had their four-game winning streak with a home loss to rival Utah last Saturday.
BYU fell to the Utes, 80-49, Saturday night in a game that marked the first time since 1996 that Utah defeated the Cougars by at least 30 points.
Last Wednesday, BYU beat UNLV, 67-55. Gillespie-Carling had a season-high 26 points.
TENNIS: The men's and women's Cougar teams split a pair of matches at home last Saturday.
The men beat Eastern Washington, 4-3 to improve their record to 3-0.
The women were not as fortunate, falling 5-2 to Arkansas. With the loss, the Cougars' record dropped to 2-2.
Up next, both teams will hit the road, with the men traveling to face UCLA and Loyola-Marymount on Friday and Saturday. The women will travel north to take on Washington State and Washington that same weekend.
SWIMMING AND DIVING: The BYU women overcame Colorado State at home last Thursday, 158.5-136.5, in a matchup between the conferences two top teams.
The Cougars are next in action at Air Force today at 6 p.m.
BYU senior Jorge Azevedo was named the Mountain West Conference men's swimmer of the week, while teammates Rachel Grant and Tawni Jones were tabbed the MWC women's swimmer and diver of the week.
