Avalanche deaths in the U.S. so far this season
• Dec. 2: In Washington, three snowboarders died in the backcountry north of Crystal Mountain ski area.
• Dec. 2: In Colorado, one snowboarder was buried by an avalanche in Hot Dog Bowl near Zimmerman Lake. He was rescued by his companions but died a week later from his injuries.
• Dec. 2: In Washington, three hikers were caught by an avalanche near Source Lake near Snoqualmie Pass. Two of the hikers died.
• Dec. 18: In Washington, one snowshoer died in an avalanche in the Edith Creek Basin of Mount Rainier National Park.
• Dec. 23: In Utah, one skier died after four were caught in an avalanche in the Red Pine Chute of Canyons Mountain Resort.
• Dec. 25: In Utah, one snowmobiler was caught in an avalanche and died in the Super Bowl area near Windy Ridge.
• Dec. 31: In Utah, three snowmobilers were caught in an avalanche at Co-op Creek. One was buried and killed.
• Jan. 1: In Washington, five snowmobilers were caught in an avalanche in the Excelsior Pass area north of Mount Baker. Two were killed.
