The Salt Lake Valley Board of Health voted Thursday to draft a resolution aimed at banning smoking in the county's public venues.

The resolution will ask the Salt Lake County Council to make it an infraction to smoke in county parks, recreation areas, golf courses, cemeteries and where there are mass gatherings.

An earlier proposal would have made the penalties more severe than those for an infraction, which incurs a fine, said spokeswoman Pam Davenport.
