PROVO — Several high-profile issues are scheduled for public hearings and votes at Tuesday night's Provo City Council meeting.

The council will consider a resolution to postpone a decision whether to require permits for parking on the streets south of the Brigham Young University campus.

The proposed program has drawn heavy interest from BYU students and residents of the Joaquin neighborhoods that lie south of the university from 800 North down to Center Street.

A proposal for on-street permits for the northern part of the neighborhoods appeared ready for approval last month until BYU sent a last-minute letter to the council asking for a postponement. The council complied, and now it will consider postponing any decision on the North Joaquin proposal until a potential permit program for South Joaquin is evaluated.

The council also will hold a public hearing on Anderson Development's request to change what is known as the Radio Tower property in southwest Provo from an agricultural zone to residential. Anderson has been trying for three years, with some strong neighborhood opposition, to rezone the land so it can build a subdivision.

Anderson has said it wants lots as small as 8,000 square feet, but neighbors have asked for larger lots. The public hearing will consider a zoning change that would require lots of at least 10,000 square feet.

Another public hearing is slated for a discussion about whether Provo should lend its tax-exempt status to Action Target so the company can issue $9 million in tax-exempt bonds to finance construction of a manufacturing facility.

Action Target builds shooting-range equipment.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at the City Center, 351 W. Center.
