As conditions stand now in some areas of Utah, new snowfall supported on a weaker layer creates this slab condition. And rapidly changing temperatures, causing a freeze-thaw effect, can create a slab that can break loose.

Slabs break loose when the weight of the slab of snow exceeds the bonding strength of the snowpack.

Slides occur on slopes between 30 and 45 degrees, with the greatest majority occurring on slopes between 35 and 42 degrees.

The most obvious way of avoiding danger is to avoid avalanche terrain — especially when the forecast center rates conditions as considerable, high or extreme.

There are also warning signs people can look for while touring. Signs of avalanches on slopes that appear to have a similar angle can be very important in determining inherent dangers. Open bowls, treeless slopes and narrow gullies are natural slide routes. Also, leeward slopes with drifting snow are a definite warning sign.

As important as it is to know how and why avalanches occur, it is also important that those heading into the backcountry be prepared with the right equipment just in case there is an emergency. This would include having a probe pole, snow shovel, snow saw and a rescue beacon on each member of the party.

When there is a storm coming, or immediately after a storm, anyone headed into the backcountry should call the Utah Avalanche Center, which is the best source for avalanche conditions. The number is 1-888-999-4019.

There are seven avalanche areas in Utah, each with a staff of avalanche forecasters who are out in the field daily reporting on current conditions. Those centers are Logan, western Uinta, Ogden, Salt Lake City, Provo, Manti-Skyline and Moab.

Along with a detailed advisory, the centers also offer educational information and weather forecasts.
