CEDAR CITY — Search and rescue teams located a small plane Tuesday night that had crashed in rugged territory that afternoon.

Crews saw the fallen plane from the air about 6 p.m., but were unable to get to it until about 9 p.m., Iron County dispatchers said.

Rescue teams spent several hours walking through the rough foliage before finding the wreckage, police said. The spot was inaccessible by motorized vehicles.

The plane was reported overdue about 1:30 p.m., dispatchers said. A distress signal was picked up in northern Iron County, about 10 miles from the town of Minersville.

Dispatchers said the plane was headed toward St. George. Iron County sheriff's deputies and the Civil Air Patrol were involved in the search.

Little information about any passengers aboard the plane and the exact location of the crash was available Tuesday night.
