From Deseret News archives:

Treadmill (yuck), trail (yeah) and gym etiquette

I have actually altered my workout three times in the last month because someone left eight 45-pound plates on the squat machine. Seriously, why would you do that? One afternoon I wanted to bench press (just the bar) and I couldn't find a bar that wasn't loaded with serious weight. And after convincing myself I love the gym, I just can't bring myself to put your weights away. It just reminds me that I have to clean my house when I get home.

So to those of you who are fortunate enough to have superhuman strength, give us mere mortals a break. Don't deter us from our goal. Don't add to our discouragement. Don't make it any harder for us to succeed than it already is. PUT YOUR WEIGHTS AWAY WHEN YOU'RE FINISHED! PLEASE! We'll admire your muscles a lot more if they come with manners.

And once the snow stops falling and I head back out onto the trail, I would ask a favor of those of you who, like me, run with your dogs:

KEEP YOUR DOGS ON A LEASH!

I run with my red heeler, Lucy, so I know this is a pain. But keep in mind, not everyone loves our dogs as much as we do. In fact, I know people who are downright afraid of them. And while your dog always comes to you when you call, I guarantee you that when I run by with my dog, your dog won't be able to resist the urge to say hello.

Just keep in mind, as it is the holiday season, that others are struggling through their workouts, their walks and maybe even their lives. Do what you can to make it a little easier, and it's my belief that compassion will be returned to you.

Or at the very least, some frustrated, stir-crazy weekend warrior like myself won't be tempted to yell at you.
