Newly appointed U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey is coming to Utah, to speak to a conference of attorneys general from around the nation.

The Utah Attorney General's Office announced Wednesday that Mukasey will be speaking today at the National Association of Attorneys General's semi-annual meeting at The Canyons Resort in Park City.

Mukasey, a retired federal judge from New York, recently was appointed by President Bush to head the U.S. Justice Department, which faced criticism under former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales over the firing of U.S. Attorneys and wiretapping.

During his confirmation hearings, Mukasey faced questions and criticism about his feelings on the controversial interrogation technique known as "waterboarding," which simulates drowning. Mukasey refused to call it torture.

More than 33 of the nation's state attorneys general will be in attendance, and Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff's spokesman Paul Murphy said there will be great interest in what Mukasey has to say to the group.

The conference also will cover issues including domestic violence, mortgage fraud, anti-trust issues, sex offenders and multi-state cooperation.

"Normally it's held in Florida, and (Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff) wanted the attorneys general to experience winter in Utah," Murphy said.
