Historical board OKs grants to 17 entities

The Utah State Historical Records Advisory Board has announced its 2007 grant awards, with a total of 17 grant applicants approved for either full or partial funding.

These grants were made possible through funding from the Utah Legislature for the Regional Repository Training and Development "Preserving Utah" Historical Documents program.

The funding allows for a grant and training program to be administered over the next three years. The grants play a vital role in preserving Utah's historical records and making them more accessible to the public.

Operational grants went to:
• Utah Valley State College, $2,000, for microfilm equipment for library.
• Emery County Archives, $2,000, for microfilm and computer equipment for research area.
• Uintah County Library, $2,000, for archival supplies to process historical Uintah County School records.
• Western Railroad and Mining Museum, $2,000, for microfilm equipment for research area.
• Utah State University, $1,973, for equipment and supplies to transfer oral histories into digital format.
• Southern Utah University, $2,000, for archival supplies for historical collections.

• Weber State University, $2,000, to process historic architectural collections.

Project grants went to:
• La Verkin city, $1,000, to organize and process the La Verkin Bench Canal Co. records.
• International Society Daughters of Utah Pioneers, $7,500, to prepare and digitize 100,000 pioneer histories.
• Utah State University, $4,960, for Latino Voices oral history project transcription.
• Western Mining and Railroad Museum, $7,500, to perform a records inventory to properly identify, catalog and make accessible paper records of the museum.
• Newton Town Library, $700, to catalog and preserve 200 pictures of school classes from 1885-1968, historic home photographs and local histories.
• San Juan County, $3,000, to create a digital archive of local historic photographs.
• John Hutchings Museum of Natural History, $7,300, to digitize Broadbent photograph collection.
• Southern Utah University, $2,000, to digitize 600 images from a variety of collections.
• Ballet West, $3,000, to organize, house and catalog historical records of Ballet West, including programs, video, film, photographs, schedules, itineraries and posters.
• City of Logan, $3,000, to scan and index Logan city's historical records.
