Cougars end season with strong finish
Women's volleyball team beats SDSU, then No. 25 UNLV
The Cougars rode a balanced effort to a 30-25, 27-30, 30-21, 30-23 win against the Aztecs. Erica Lott had 18 kills and 11 digs, while Bryn Porter recorded 17 kills, Rachel Dyer had 16 and Chelsea Goodman 14.
Against the Rebels, Goodman had 23 kills and Lott 20 digs to lead BYU to a 27-30, 32-30, 30-23, 30-23 victory.
Junior outside hitter Porter was named Mountain West Conference co-player of the week, along with Utah senior outside hitter Kate Robison. In addition to her efforts against San Diego State, Porter finished with 10 kills and 10 digs against UNLV.
The Cougars (20-6 overall, 12-4 in league play) will be the No. 3 seed at the Mountain West Conference Tournament in Las Vegas this week. They will take on sixth-seeded New Mexico today at noon.
SWIMMING & DIVING: Both the men's and women's teams finished in second place at last week's Nike Cup in Long Beach, Calif.
The Cougar men tallied 1,002 points, placing only behind No. 3-ranked Stanford. The women totaled 887.5 points, behind top finisher UCLA, ranked No. 14.
Grant won three individual events against UNLV last week, while Jones won a pair of diving events. Azevedo won two individual events and swam on a pair of first-place squads to help BYU upset nationally-ranked UNLV.
Both the Cougar men and women swimmers will next be in action on Nov. 29 through Dec. 1, as they take part in the U.S. National Meet in Atlanta.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: The No. 22 BYU team saw their season come to an end in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, falling 2-0 to No. 7 Texas, in College Station, Texas, last Thursday.
Despite not finding the back of the net, the Cougars outshot the Longhorns, 25-12, and also held the advantage in corner kicks, 7-6.
BYU senior goalkeeper Erika Woodbury completed her career as the school record-holder in saves, shutouts and season shutouts. Also finishing their careers were seniors Carolyn Swenson and Jessica Aquino-Greenfield (co-captains), Natalie Nate-Henriksen, Stephanie Staples-Portwood and Ali Haymond-Harmon.
The Cougars ended their season with a 17-4-2 overall record.
ICE HOCKEY: BYU were victorious in a pair of games at UNLV, winning 5-1 on Friday and 6-4 on Saturday.
The wins improved their overall record to 6-1-1 on the season. The Cougars next play against Utah in Salt Lake City on Friday.
