Everett won 1,622 votes to 1,483 for Sandstrom, a margin of 44 percent to 41. Howard Stone received 503 votes, or 14 percent, as a write-in candidate. Another 1 percent of votes went to other write-in candidates.
Steve Turley won a second term on the City Council in city-wide District 2, defeating Coy Porter, 7,178-6,526, or 52 percent to 47 percent. Another 1 percent of votes went to write-in candidates.
Midge Johnson earned a second term representing District 3, south Provo, by defeating Melanie McCoard, 1,514-1,113, or 57.4 percent to 42.2. Write-ins made up less than 0.4 percent of the votes.
The vote on Referendum 1 was far closer in Provo than statewide, where it was defeated soundly. Provoans rejected it 50.8 percent to 49.2 percent. Of the city's 49 voting precincts, only 16 finished with more votes for Referendum 1 than against.
