Mine-safety panel hears guv's ideas

"The committee can help identify emerging technology that might be applicable to Utah's underground coal mines," he said.

McCarter said there are existing technologies that would allow mine operators to monitor stresses and pressures along internal mine walls. In addition, he noted there is equipment available that will monitor seismic activity within mines.

Matheson said he was encouraged by McCarter's insights and believes his group will assist the commission in accomplishing its ultimate goal of improving safety.

"We're getting cutting edge direction (from McCarter about) what can be done and what still needs further research," Matheson said.

He warned, however, that the commission will have to take into consideration the cost of providing such high-tech solutions when it submits its recommendations to the governor.

Before concluding his formal comments, Huntsman implored the commission to submit preliminary interim recommendations by next month before his office drafts its 2008 budget.
