A renewable energy focus group has identified objectives it recommends the state pursue to both improve the environment and protect economic development in the state.

At a Friday press conference, Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. said recommendations from the Utah Renewable Energy Initiative Focus Group will help the state develop trend-setting public policy. He called work in Utah to implement renewable-energy policy "probably the most aggressive in the Western region."

Among the focus group's recommends are an evaluation of renewable-energy development zones, the investigation of renewable-energy quotas for utilities, research of the integration of renewable energy into the electrical system and an audit of existing regulations on state utilities.

Within the next few weeks, the governor said he expects to announce the formation of an advisory board to carry forward the focus group's recommendations.

Improving air quality in Utah is a top priority, he said.

Ernie Wessman, a consultant representing power companies and the group's chairman, said the group didn't reach consensus on all issues on the table, but it did identify key areas the group agreed on.

"I think we're on a good path to go forward from here," he said.

Sierra Club representative Tim Wagner, also on the focus group, said he hopes to see the group's work turn "into something really productive — and green."
