3 Utah County events to offer information on vouchers
Backers, opponents to give perspectives Thursday to voters
Three events in Utah County on Thursday will present information from the perspectives of people for and against them.
• The Women's Legislative Council of Utah County will present information about vouchers from members of its education committee at 10 a.m. at Provo City Library at Academy Square, 550 N. University Ave., on the second floor.
• The October meeting of Women in Leadership will feature a discussion of "pros" and "cons" by Marilyn Kofford, a former Utah State PTA Education commissioner, and John Dougall, R-American Fork, at noon at the Provo City Library at Academy Square, 550 N. University Ave., Room 309. A buffet lunch is available for $7.
• Utah Valley State College will host Utah State Board of Education chairman Kim Burningham, a voucher critic, and Overstock.com Chief Executive Officer Patrick Byrne, a voucher supporter, in a debate from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Lossee Learning Center Faculty Seminar Room 243.
The voucher law passed by the Utah Legislature this spring is the nation's most comprehensive, offering families up to $3,000 per child to subsidize private school tuition, depending on family need.
