Cool weather won't halt bikers

FASTER THAN ZABRISKIE?: After winning the national time trial championship a month ago, some of the last people you'd expect to see David Zabriskie riding bikes with are those unable to keep up a 10-minute-mile pace. Yet Zabriskie will be a big part of the second annual Bikes for Kids event.

The Salt Lake pro is lending his name and time to the organization to help donate 1,000 bikes, helmets and locks to children in the area.

Part of the weekend's festivities is a casual ride on Oct. 6 with Zabriskie for those who donate $1,000 or more. There will also be a hill climb race on Oct. 5 for those who are drawn from a lottery. The drawing winners will hold a time trial up Traverse Ridge Road to Suncrest.

The will also be rides ranging from 5K to 100K with proceeds supporting Bikes For Kids and Zabriskie's Yield to Life organization.

RIDE OF THE WEEK: In memory of fallen cyclist Josie Johnson and to help raise awareness of bicycle safety, the Josie Johnson Memorial Ride will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Sugarhouse Park. The short ride to Mill Hollow Park and back will honor the many cyclists who have been killed or injured in car-bicycle accidents.
