"Midsomer Murders: Set Nine" (Acorn, 2004, four discs, $49.99). More grisly murders are investigated in this popular series about a family-man detective and his young assistant in England, a show that is still in production.

Extras: Widescreen, four episodes, text biographies/filmographies

Comedy-drama/sitcom

"What About Brian: The Complete Series" (Touchstone, 2006-07, five discs, $59.99). This amusing "thirtysomething"-style comedy-drama features a strong ensemble cast led by Barry Watson as the title character, who has a crush on the fiancee (Sarah Lancaster) of his best friend (played by Matthew Davis, a native Utahn).

Extras: Widescreen, 24 episodes, unaired episode, audio commentaries, featurettes

• "My Name Is Earl" (Fox, 2006-07, four discs, $49.98). The second season got a lot sleazier, sadly, but this is still a funny series, as Earl (Jason Lee) tries to right wrongs from his past. As his ex-wife, Jaime Pressly won a well-deserved Emmy.

Extras: Widescreen, 23 episodes, deleted scenes, audio commentaries, featurettes, bloopers

Documentaries

"Vampira: The Movie" (Alpha, 2007, b/w and color, $14.98). The 1950s Los Angeles horror hostess, and the actress who played her, Maila Nurmi (also a co-star in what is thought to be the worst movie of all time, "Plan 9 From Outer Space"), is profiled with clips and interviews. Campy fun.

Extras: Widescreen, audio commentary, featurettes, vintage clips, music video

"Popular Mechanics: The New Technology of War" (Koch, 2007, $29.98). Sometimes scary look at the mechanics of war in the 21st century, along with postulations about the future of warfare.

Extras: Full frame, five episodes

Reality shows

"Inside the Actors Studio: Leading Men" (Shout! 2007, four discs, $39.99). Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Sean Penn and Russell Crowe are actors who like to keep things close to the vest, so pulling them out for interviews can be tough. But all four open up more than usual before the students on this Bravo series, hosted by James Lipton. Fans of acting, as well as these particular actors won't be disappointed.

Extras: Full frame, deleted scenes
