Comedies, musicals, dramas coming to venues across Utah
Performances are 7:30 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays with Saturday matinees at 3:30 p.m. beginning Oct. 13 (no performances on Oct. 31 and Nov. 22). Tickets range from $13.50-$17.50 (226-8600, www.haletheater.com).
• THE HEIRESS, Augustus and Ruth Goetz's stage adaptation of Henry James' novel "Washington Square" opens Thursday at Utah Valley State College, Orem, where it continues through Oct. 6.
Set in 1850 in the fashionable New York home of Dr. Austin Sloper, the plot revolves around Catherine, his plain and insecure young daughter, who falls desperately in love with Morris Townsend, a handsome young man of questionable means. Director Christopher Clark's cast includes Jaclyn Hales as Catherine, Alex Ungerman as Morris and Jake Suazo as Dr. Sloper.
• BIG CONVERSATION, a free discussion and open forum on "The Movies: Growing New Audiences for Stories That Re-define How We Look at the World," will be held today from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at Salt Lake Acting Company, 168 W. 500 North, in conjunction with its current production, "Moonlight & Magnolias," a comedy about one week in which legendary Hollywood producer David O. Selznick had the script for "Gone With the Wind" rewritten in 1939 while the film was being shot. Selznick is credited with changing the ways stories were told cinematically.
Panelists include Erick Blackburn of the Westerns of the World Film Festival, Tori Baker of the Salt Lake Film Society, Geralyn Dreyfous of the Salt Lake City Film Center and Laurence Loeb of the Middle East Film Series.
The discussion will precede today's 2 p.m. matinee performance of "Moonlight & Magnolias" (363-7522 or www.saltlakeactingcompany.org).
• KING LEAR, a special adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy geared to younger audiences, will be staged Tuesday through Oct. 5 by Brigham Young University's "Young Company."
