Cavemen no match for powerful Mater Dei
Matt Barkley threw for 440 yards and five touchdowns while completing 27 of 40 passes to lead Mater Dei of Santa Ana to a 50-32 victory in front of about 5,400 at Santa Ana Stadium.
The junior, who amassed a career-high 303 yards the previous week, went 15 of 17 for 202 yards and three touchdowns in the first quarter.
"He's a legitimate Division I (college) quarterback," American Fork coach Davis Knight said. "We've played in all the passing leagues in Utah and we haven't seen anyone with that kind of velocity on the football and with a receiving corps like that."
Mater Dei (2-0), ranked sixth nationally by Rivals.com, built a 28-14 lead before the Caveman narrowed the deficit to 28-20 on Taylor Jones' 15-yard touchdown pass to Jake Murphy with three seconds before halftime.
"Some of those kids, their chest isn't big enough to hold their heart," Knight said of his players. "We had kids who left absolutely everything they had out on the field."
Murphy scored all five touchdowns for the Cavemen (3-2). He caught eight passes for 192 yards and four touchdown, and returned an interception 23 yards for another score.
Jones completed 12 of 29 passes for 219 yards and four touchdowns but threw two interceptions, one of which led to one of Mater Dei's touchdowns.
