The Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah has received a $1.6 million federal grant to improve housing.

The funding, from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, will help maintain existing homes and rental units, and provide housing-related services to 86 families. Funds will also go to crime prevention and safety activities.

HUD's Indian Housing Block Grant Program gives $624 million to nearly 400 tribes each year for a variety of affordable housing projects.
