Judge Memorial defeats Woods Cross, 41-18
In the first half, both teams capitalized on big plays, but costly second-half turnovers doomed the Wildcats as Judge used a 20-0 run in the third quarter to earn a 41-18 blow out of the 4A team.
The game was decided early in the third quarter and Woods Cross didn't just hit the panic button, they smashed it in with two interceptions and a lost fumble. An opportunistic Bulldogs team took advantage of the gifts, expanding their 14-12 lead to 22 points by the end of the quarter.
Judge's Bruce Garlinghouse and cornerback Keeyn Walker produced the game's standout performances. Running back Garlinghouse scored two touchdowns, including a 98 yard kickoff return that gave the Bulldogs a 7-6 lead midway through the first quarter. The junior also recovered a key fumble in the opening moments of the third quarter that swung all the momentum the Bulldogs way.
"It was one of the (most) fun halves of football I've ever played in," said the Bulldogs junior running back.
"That kid's one of the best athletes I've seen," said Garlinghouse of his teammate.
Judge coach James Cordova told his team at the half to simply play football and things would turn around. Cordova said his team was just going through the motions in the first half.
"When we pick up our intensity, we can play with anybody. Woods Cross is an excellent team. They came out ready to play and we didn't," said the Judge coach.
Woods Cross looked ready to make a game of it when Jonathan Feller hooked up with QB Jordan Smith on a 33-yard pass play that got the Wildcats inside the Judge 25-yard line. Four plays later, Smith found Chris Haning for a 7-yard score, cutting the Bulldogs' lead down to just two points.
But the good times wouldn't last for Woods Cross as Judge blew things wide open in the second half.
After Garlinghouse's fumble recovery, new Judge signal caller Chris Pell entered the game for injured starter Joe Pond. The junior quarterback drove to the Wildcats 23-yard line and one play later, running back Tyson Moll scampered right through the middle of the Woods Cross defense for pay dirt and 20-12 lead.
After playing a mediocre first half of football, Judge's offense turned things around quickly, outscoring Woods Cross 27-6 in the second half.
