Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr.: "Tough summer. We had bear attacks, wildfires and a mine collapse. But me and Arnold are on the GOP Green Team and we're reducing our carbon footprint. The economy is strong, and the only thing hotter than the triple-digit temperatures are my approval ratings."

Republican legislative leadership: "This was a productive summer for us. We paved the way for a Jordan School District split, promised to do something later about funding equalization and animal torture, and got a parade float built in Utah County. Now we're hoping for a voucher victory in November!"

Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon: "It's been a quiet summer after the Real soccer stadium controversy. I just observe the antics and squabbling of the County Council and try to be the county adult."

Salt Lake City mayoral candidates: "We had a great summer. We did not engage in personal attacks, and we stuck to the issues. We succeeded in making this contest the most boring Utah election in decades!"

Sandy Mayor Tom Dolan: "Did summer happen? All I saw were dark back rooms (with lots of doughnuts) where I did deals and orchestrated Utah politics."

Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson: "What else! Now that I'm leaving office I spent the summer writing Volume 1 of my 10-volume set of memoirs. Volume 1 is titled, 'The Smartest Kid in Diapers."'

Deseret Morning News Editor Joe Cannon: "I spent the summer doing two things: (1) Redesigning the paper's Web site. Now I get to read all the nasty things people write in the comments section. (2) Apologizing to readers for the dumb columns written by Frank and LaVarr."

LaVarr Webb: "Lousy summer. Very little fishing. I did get in a good Grand Canyon hike with a group that included Curt and Susan Bramble, where I personally witnessed Curt cheat at cards while playing his wife. Otherwise, I stayed busy keeping business going by writing nice things about the Legislature."

Frank Pignanelli: "I spent many a summer evening on a worthwhile project — perfecting the homemade margarita."

Republican LaVarr Webb was policy deputy to Gov. Mike Leavitt and Deseret News managing editor. He now is a political consultant and lobbyist. E-mail: lwebb@exoro.com. Democrat Frank Pignanelli is a Salt Lake attorney, lobbyist and political adviser. A former candidate for Salt Lake mayor, he served 10 years in the Utah House of Representatives, six years as House minority leader. Pignanelli's spouse, D'Arcy Dixon Pignanelli, is a Utah state tax commissioner. E-mail: frankp@xmission.com.
