PAYSON — After several failed attempts to corral a loose bull on I-15, Utah Highway Patrol officers shot the animal to prevent an accident.

Highway Patrolman Preston Raban said officers arrived at the scene near Payson about 2 p.m. Thursday and found a large bull trotting around the freeway. They tried several times to catch the animal, but it kept breaking free and darting toward the freeway. Police finally decided they had to shoot the bull to prevent an accident.

"A car hitting a cow at high speeds is absolutely nasty," Raban said.

The troopers are still trying to determine who the animal belonged to and how it got out near the freeway, Raban said.
