Campuses go wireless: Laptops growing in popularity

And schools in Utah are trying not to get swept away with enthusiasm for wireless technology.

"We're trying not to be exclusive, as not everyone has access to computers and technology," Hawley said. "And (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliance, those with special needs we need to provide multiple accesses to Utah State University services. But (for) the vast majority, that's the direction things are going."

45.8% of 933 colleges and universities throughout the world are equipped with wireless Internet connectivity.

Mike Simpson configures a wireless access point that will go into a classroom at UVSC. UVSC used to charge a fee for wireless access, but now the cost is included in tuition, and they expect there will be a lot more demand, so they are upgrading and adding new access points throughout the school.
