Bikers and hikers alike have grown to love the single-track trail high above the east bench.

The Bonneville Shoreline Trail offers miles of enjoyment for casual cyclists as well as experts seeking a few quick miles near the heart of the city.

There is a proposal, though, to complete an extension of the trail system from a trailhead near Parleys Canyon to the Draper city line. The proposal from the National Forest Service is seeking comments before proceeding with work on the trail.

The additional miles of trail are not without controversy, though. Some homeowners with property high in the foothills fear increased bicycle and hiker traffic will create too much noise, traffic and possibly crime while also creating irreparable damage to the mountainside.

A public hearing was held a couple of weeks ago, and comments will be accepted until Aug. 13.

Information on the proposed trail extension can be found at www.fs.fed.us/r4/wcnf/projects/proposed. Comments can be e-mailed to comments-intermtn-wasatch-cache-saltlake@fs.fed.us.

If completed, the extension would complete a long stretch of trail from City Creek Canyon to Draper.

ULCER ON DECK: Utah's signature bicycle ride is around the corner. The 111-mile ride around Utah Lake will be held Aug. 11 with a new start-finish point at Thanksgiving Point.

ULCER, short for Utah Lake Century Epic Ride, is one of the most popular rides in the West with nearly 1,800 cyclists pedaling away with proceeds going to help support the National Kidney Foundation. The event is sponsored by the Bonneville Bicycle and Touring Club.

Though there are shorter options of 33 or 67 miles, this year's course has extended the ride to 111 miles for the bravest. In addition to the recreational ride, there is a new wrinkle. Teams of three to six cyclists can join forces in a time trial for bragging rights as the fastest collective group of cyclists in the event.

Teams will take off at 7 a.m. with all others rolling out of Electric Park at Thanksgiving Point at 7:30. Visit BBTC.net for more information or to register.
