Crew revives dog after blaze
Crews were called to a mobile home fire near 2000 W. North Temple just after 11 p.m. and arrived to find a vacant mobile home engulfed in flames, said Salt Lake City Assistant Battalion Chief Dennis McKone. Transients using the trailer for shelter were believed to have accidently started the fire.
The flames started to spread to a newly constructed porch at the neighboring trailer. The lone occupant had to get out by going through a window. He suffered cuts on his arm and minor smoke inhalation, McKone said.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames before they got inside, he said.
When firefighters entered the trailer, they found a dog that needed medical attention. One of the paramedics who responded to the fire had just attended a class on how to start an IV on a dog.
Paramedics worked on the dog, putting in an IV and using an oxygen mask specially designed for dogs and were able to resuscitate the pet.
"That trailer, his truck and the dog were that man's entire life," McKone said. "It's just a big, lovable dog."
The total damage to both mobile homes is estimated at $80,000. Damage to the dog owner's home, which was contained mainly to the deck with some smoke damage inside, was $10,000 to $15,000.
